Hilda Violette Marks (1873–1948)

On the 9th December, 1948, there passed away at her residence in Sydney, Miss Hilda V. Marks, sister of the Foundation President of the [Australian Jewish Historical] Society, Percy J. Marks, B.A., and of Ernest S. Marks, C.B.E., the third President of our institution.

Born at West Maitland, the deceased was very active for some years in several Jewish organisations, notably the Jewish Girls' Guild, as well as the Shakespeare Society of New South Wales. She was a foundation and a Life Member of our [The Australian Jewish Historical] Society. While her brother, the late Alderman Marks, was Lord Mayor of Sydney in 1930, she served with dignity in the responsible office of Lady Mayoress.

Miss Marks was a contributor to this Society's Journal. At her death the valuable collection of Australian Judaica assembled by her brothers passed to the Mitchell Library, where, under the provision made by them, it will be preserved for the benefit of scholars and students. The estate of Miss Marks is bequeathed to Jewish and other institutions, including the University of Sydney. Deceased, who had travelled much abroad, was of a retiring disposition. She was unmarried, and the last descendant of her maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Benjamin, of Sydney and Goulburn.
