Residents of the Balranald (N.S.W.) district will be sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Walter Alexander Macpherson, who for so long was connected with the old Paika Station.
A son of the late Peter Macpherson, he was born at Springhill, in the Wimmera district, Victoria, sixty-two years ago. He received his education at Geelong College, and while there made quite a name for himself as an athlete. He was good at running, cricket and football, and so far as football is concerned, played in the Geelong League team.
Shortly after leaving school he went to Paika Station, Balranald, and worked there under his father. On the death of the latter about 1893 he took over the management of the property, which was worked on behalf of the family. This position he filled with conspicuous success until the station was subdivided some three years ago. He then purchased Goonambil Station, Urana, which he held to the time of his death.
Mr. W. A. Macpherson took a keen interest in all local affairs. He was for some years chairman of the Balranald Pastures Protection Board, and was held in high esteem throughout the district. Of a kindly and generous disposition he was always ready to help neighbours, specially in their times of stress.
He married a daughter of the late Thomas Brown, of Tuppal, N.S.W., and leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters. His surviving brothers are Alan J., Sidney R., and Leslie M. Macpherson.
