Edward Yule (Ned) Lowry (1846–1898)

On Monday last Alderman E. Y. [Edward Yule] Lowry, of Townsville, who was also local agent of the Seamen's Union, suddenly passed away. Poor ''Old Ned,' as he was familiarly called, had for years taken an active part in the Labour movement of Queensland, and died in harness, attending a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He had just moved an amendment that Mrs. Doyle be the president of the society when he was taken suddenly ill and on the doctor arriving on the scene he found that Ned had answered the imperative summons. The sad incident shocked everyone present, and the meeting sympathetically broke up. Whilst the body of the deceased remained in the Town Hall, steps were taken to break the news gently to Mrs. Lowry and family, and hundreds during the meantime entered the hall to take a sorrowing look at the departed. In the turmoil of public life Ned gave and received hard knocks, and the world was not too kind to him. Now that he has gone may he rest in peace.
