Barron Laing (1827–1894)

There died at his residence, Castlereagh-street, Penrith, on Saturday last, Mr. Barron Laing who has been ailing for some time and who was attended by Dr. Shand. The deceased gentleman was 68 years of age at the time of his death. He had been a resident of the district for upwards of 35 years. When he first started business it was in the premises at the corner of High and Station-streets, the block on which the A.J.B. Bank stands. About 15 years ago he left there and was in active business in the premises now occupied by Mr. B. Butler until a few years ago. After giving up business there he had a few years of varied experiences, and when his son Aleck started business on his own account he commenced baking for him, and continued to do so until a few days before his death. Mrs. Laing died several years ago and deceased leaves two sons and two daughters. One son George was an articled clerk to the firm of Gannon and McLaughlin for many years, and is now employed in the office of Mr. W. J. Hill, soliticor. Aleck is doing a fair business on his own account and his sisters keep house. The cause of Mr. Laing's death was an affection of the lungs and a general break up of the system.
