Matthew Kelly (1842–1925)

Matthew Kelly, an old and respected identity of the district, has died peacefully at the Victoria Hospital, Barcaldine. Mr. Kelly was born on St. Patrick's Day, 1842, at Armagh (Ireland), and landed at Rockhampton in 1865. He obtained employment on cattle stations in the Gladstone district, afterwards going to Peak Downs for the Fairbairns. Later he went to Barcaldine Downs, where he contracted for much fencing under the Fairbairn regime, Mr. Johnson then being the manager. Of late years Mr. Kelly lived in quiet retirement. He was a well-read man, and took three trips to his native land, where he purchased a farm for his parents in Armagh County. The funeral was conducted by Father Mcllbeney.
