Thomas Jowett (1825–1898)

Mr Thomas Jowett of West-street, Ipswich, died at his residence about 1 o’clock yesterday morning. The deceased, who was about 73 years of age, had been ailing for about twelve months, but though he suffered acutely, he was confined to his bed only about three days. Mr Jowett was a native of Bradford, Yorkshire, and has been in the colonies forty-three years, having come to Australia in the sailing vessel Queen of Hanover. He remained in Sydney for about ten years, and then went to Ipswich, where he had resided for thirty-three years. He went to that town with the firm of Messrs. Peto, Brassey, and Betts when the Southern and Western Railway was being constructed, and was employed on that undertaking. The deceased was a stonemason by trade, but was connected with railway construction, and particularly bridge work, for many years. Mr Jowett was a very old resident of the town and was highly regarded.
