Thomas (Tom) Johnston (c. 1859–1934)

Mr. Thomas Johnston who died at his residence, Holmesville, West Wallsend, on June 18, was 75 years of age. He came to Australia in 1886, and took up his residence at Greta, where he followed his occupation as a miner. At one period he was under-manager at Greta colliery. He was also employed at Hetton on Bullock Island, Stockton, Minmi Killingworth, and Seaham No. 2 mines. At Seaham No. 2. prior to his retirement he was employed on the screens.

For the past 28 years Mr Johnston resided in West Wallsend, where he took an active part in industrial and political matters. At one time, with Messrs. D. McNeill and T. Hoare, he stood as a Socialist candidate for Parliamentary honours. He took a keen interest in Friendly Societies, and was a member of the Free Gardeners since 1904. He served in various offices in the order. He was a keen debater, and on several occasions took the platform in debate. He was also a writer of note through "Newcastle Morning Herald".
