Thomas Charles (Tom) Jewell (1864–1948)

from Record

The death occurred last Tuesday night of Mr. Thomas Charles Jewell, Dinsdale street, Albert Park, who was secretary of the Tramways Employees' Association for 24 years and also, for a long time, secretary of Albert Park branch of the Australian Natives' Association.

A man whose honesty knew no compromise, he earned the respect and regard of all with whom he came in contact. During his years as a union official he built up a reputation as an arbitrator and few indeed were the problems and difficulties on which he and the Tramways Board could not reach agreement. His requests on behalf of his workmates always received the utmost consideration from their employers, who were confident of the reasonableness of any cause to which Mr. Jewell lent his support. He was also Federal secretary of the union for many years.

Aged 84, the deceased is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral, which was at Melbourne Crematorium, Fawkner, last Thursday.
