On Saturday, December 4, 1971, Waikerie lost one of its most respected citizens in the death of Mr. John Robert Jemison, of Ramco.
It is just over 50 years since he took up an orchard in Ramco and he immediately became involved in public affairs.
It was due mainly to his efforts that a new school and Institute in Ramco became a reality.
During his 21 years as Manager of Ramco Co-operative Ltd. He became widely known throughout the State and River District in connection with the Dried Fruit and Citrus Industries.
For over 16 years he was a member of the State Dried Fruit Board and representative to Federal Council.
His interest in civic affairs was marked by membership of the District Council for 15 years and for a time was Acting Chairman.
The hospital was of great interest to him and he was a member of the Board for some years.
For over 30 years he was a Justice of the Peace and his knowledge of the law stood him in good stead in this capacity.
He was a member of the Bowling Club and the Waikerie Club. The latter body bestowed honorary life membership on him in recognition of his services as a foundation member and Committee member covering a long period.
He leaves a widow, two daughters and a son.
It may be fairly said that the Waikerie District, the Dried Fruits and Citrus Industries were well served by John Robert Jemison.
