John (Jack) Howie (1890–1953)

Tribune extends deepest sympathy to the wife and family of Mr. J. [John] Howie, who died Sunday, March 22.

Mr. Norm Jeffery who conducted the funeral service, recalled Mr. Howie's long years of service to the working class.

In World War I Mr. Howie played a leading part in the fight against conscription.

As president of the New South Wales Labor Council for six years he fought for formation of the ACTU, and visited the Soviet Union.

He was a foundation member of the Communist Party of Australia, and remained an active member until his death.

Sorrow of his wife and family is shared by thousands who will always remember him as a courageous fighter for the cause of the labor movement and humanity.
