James Howatson (?–1897)

The many friends and acquaintances of Mr. James Howatson, of Mount Derrimut, Deer Park, near Melbourne, will be shocked to hear of his sudden death last week. Mr. Howatson was a native of Dumfrieshire, and, arriving in Victoria in 1859, entered into pastoral pursuits in the Western District, while latterly he has chiefly been interested in properties in New South Wales. He retired from active supervision of his properties some years ago, interesting himself in breeding studs for his stations at Mount Derrimut. Mr. Howatson's loss will be deeply regretted in pastoral circles, where he was well known and esteemed.
