Mr. Maurice Howard died on July 19 at West-terrace, where he had resided for 27 years. He was deeply respected and will be greatly missed. He was born in Goorendcrk, County Limerick, on July 4, 1850, and arrived in South Australia when a boy. He had been in the service of the South Australian Government for a period of 40 years, and relinquished his position two years ago owing to ill-health. He was an active worker in public affairs, and evinced a keen interest in the politics of the day. In his early days he was apprenticed as a jockey, but tired of the life. He was connected with the Australian Society of Engineers for many years, but later joined the Amalgamated Society, to which he belonged until his retirement. He leaves a widow, four sons, one of whom is Mr. T. P. Howard, the secretary of the Adelaide Trades and Labor Council, three daughters, and eight grandchildren.
