Mr. William Hawley, of Annandale, Tallangatta, Vic., one of the largest landholders in the district, died last month, aged 70. He was born in Staffordshire, England, and came to Australia in 1862, spending the first few years in Queensland at Lammermoor Station, and eventually entering the employ of the late Henry Ricketson. He was occupied in droving fat stock for that gentleman from Deniliquin (N.S.W.) to the Melbourne markets for a few years, and later on became manager of Aratula, Baratta, and Cornalla Stations, in the Deniliquin district, also of Upper Moira Station, across the river in Victoria. This position he held until 1886, when he purchased Annandale Station, near Tallangatta, in Victoria, from Messrs. Singleton Bros.
Mr. Hawley resided at Annandale until the time of his death, at which time he also owned Merool Creek, Whitton, N.S.W. He was interested in all local movements, and maintained his keen business qualities until the end.
