Mary Kate Harvey (1850–1935)

Mary K. Harvey, who was aged 85 years, died on Saturday morning at the residence of her daughter (Mrs W. Campbell) in Sturt street, Echuca East. The late Mrs Harvey, who had been declining for some months, be came worse a few weeks ago, but passed peacefully away after a short period of unconsciousness. She was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs C. T. Hewett, and was born at Macclesfield, South Australia. Her father was one of the early members of the South Australian Legislative Council. The late Mrs Harvey remembered the Adelaide district when tribes of aborigines were a common sight in that country. With her husband (the late Mr James Harvey) she came to this district 52 years ago, and settled at Bunaloo, on the New South Wales side of the Murray. Later they took up land near Mathoura, and then moved to Deniliquin, where Mr Harvey died in 1894. After her husband's death Mrs Harvey came to Echuca with her family. In her declining years she lived with her daughters. She leaves three daughters and two sons — Katherine (Mrs W. Campbell), Echuca; Elizabeth (Mrs W. Flower), Echuca; Edith (Mrs T. Fry), Kensington; Mr D. Harvey (Dandenong), Mr W. J. Harvey (Bendigo). There are 20 grandchildren and 10 great, grandchildren.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, Pastor W. A. Wigney, of the Church of Christ, conducted a service at the house, and the burial at the Echuca cemetery. Many floral tributes from the family and friends were placed on the casket. Mr R. J. Bromley, of Echuca, carried out the funeral arrangements.
