Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Hartwig (1875–1963)

With the passing away of Mr. Hartwig on Friday, August 16, the Ramco District has lost one of its early pioneers. He attained the age of 88 years.

The late Mr. W. Hartwig was born on May 22, 1875, at Towitta, near Sedan, as son of Carl August Hartwig and his wife Eleonore, née Roocke.

He was baptised in Pilgrim's of Zion Church, Sedan, by the late Pastor J. C. Auricht, by whom he was also confirmed in the same church.

On September 7, 1905, he was united in holy wedlock with Ernstine Pauline Modistach in St Stephen Church, Stonefield, the ceremony was conducted by the late Pastor P. P. Breier. Eight children issued from this matrimonial union of which three pre-deceased him, a son Edgar, and two daughters, Alma and Gladys.

In the year 1907 he moved to Ramco, where he was engaged in farming persuits for 50 years.

In 1955 he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. It was the first golden wedding to be celebrated in St Paul's Church, Ramco.

The departed served St Paul's, Ramco for 25 years as lector. He has been a regular worshipper as long as health and strength permitted.

He leaves a wife, five children (two sons, three daughters), 36 grand-children, four brothers, one sister, 4 sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.

He was laid to rest in Ramco Cemetery on Sunday, 18th august, 1963, by Pastor E. H. Proeve, who conducted the memorial Service in St Paul's Church. Text: Psalm 25.
