Leo Cecil Hannelly (1890–1931)

The death place at Randwick Hospital on Thursday last of Mr Leo Hannelly, a well-known resident of Stuart Town. The death of Mr Hannelly, brings back to our minds the horrors of the late war, for it was from the effects of that world outbreak that his death can be traced. He was a member of the 54th battalion, and had two years war service, being severely wounded in the eye with shrapnel. He was in good health until about 18 months ago, but for the last six months had been under medical attention frequently; but the complaint from which he suffered had too great a hold on him, and he passed away to his reward on the date mentioned. The deceased was 41 years of age, and was the fifth son of Mr Michael Hannelly, of Stuart Town. He is survived by a wife. The funeral on Saturday afternoon was a military one, and was very largely attended by returned men from the town and district, as well as civilians. The remains were encased in a polished marble coffin, which was surrounded by the Union Jack, and the returned men marched in a body in the funeral procession from the church to the cemetery, his six brothers acting as pall-bearers. The services at the church and at the cemetery were conducted by the Rev Dr Gummer, of Wellington, the remains being laid to rest beside those of his mother and sister in the Catholic portion of the Stuart Town cemetery. The "Last Post" was sounded by Mr Knight, a returned soldier. A large number of beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave. The funeral arrangements at this end were carried out by Messrs Murray Bros.
