Albert Hain (1873–1927)

The sudden and untimely death of Mr. Albert Hain, of Cooma, N.S.W., on the 18th September, removed an outstanding figure of the Monaro district, especially the western section.

Mr. Albert Hain was born and practically lived all his life at Cooma, where he conducted a big business with far flung ramifications, in addition to being largely interested in pastoral pursuits.

He was a big hearted, rugged, energetic, kindly man, and was affectionately known from one end of the Monaro to the other under the soubriquet of "Buddy" Hain.

He was a man strongly imbued with the pioneer spirit. He never waited for "something to turn up," but went out and made his own opportunities with a true pioneering shrewdness, and with dogged pluck he invariably made a success of everything and anything to which he turned his attention.

Born at Cooma 54 years ago Albert Hain was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, and his death will have been dramatically sudden to a number of old friends. He had been laid up with an attack of influenza, but was convalescent. He left home to take a member of his household for a motor drive, but collapsed on his way to the car and died immediately of heart failure, due no doubt to the exhaustion and ravages of the malady from which he had recently suffered.

His demise was attended by a pathetic incident. His sister, Mrs. R. L. Sands, and her husband, drove over to see how he was progressing, but were met and informed by Mr. George Hain of the tragic happening. Mrs. Sands was sadly shaken by the news, and her husband suggested returning home, some three miles. Shortly before reaching home, however, the unfortunate lady collapsed, and passed away within an hour of her brother.

The double tragedy has cast a great gloom over the district, the deceased being universally respected by all classes. The late Mr. Hain is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.
