from Brisbane Courier
The death of Mr. William Morton Gower, who for the past 11 years has been head master of the Sandgate State School, occurred at his residence, Rotherfield, Brighton Terrace, early on Saturday morning. The deceased, who was 67 years of age, was born in London, and, after serving for a short period as a pupil teacher at the Hollydale Road Board School, at Nunhead, London, came to Queensland, where he joined the State teaching service on November 30, 1885. His promotion was rapid, and he attained the highest classification, Class 1, Division 1. "He was a most capable and zealous officer," said officers of the Department of Public Instruction when they learned of his death today. The late Mr. Gower served as head teacher at Ross River, Kamerunga, Two-mile (Gympie), Springsure, Herberton, Maryborough Central Boys' School, Allenstown (Rockhampton), Toowoomba East, Taringa, and Sandgate. He is survived by a widow and a family of two sons Messrs. H. R. Gower (Rockhampton) and E. H. Gower (Sandgate)—and three daughters—Mesdames T. C. Graham (Zonia Downs, Julia Creek), J. Roberts (Allaru, Richmond), and W. E. Hepworth (Sandgate). The funeral will leave the residence of the deceased this morning at 10 o'clock for the Bald Hills Cemetery.
