Charles Stewart Gibson (?–1926)

There recently passed away at Esk Vale, Epping, Tasmania, Charles Stewart Gibson, second son of the late Thomas Gibson, the well-known Merino sheepbreeder. The late C. S. Gibson was for many years sheep and wool classer for the late Mr. Thomas Edols, of Burrawang, Forbes, N.S.W., and was largely responsible for building up that flock to the reputation it attained, and unquestionably deserved, as one of the best flocks of Merino sheep in Australia. After many arguments the late C. S., as he was generally known, induced Mr. Edols at that time (late 70's and early 80's) to use Wanganella rams, with the result above stated. In '87 over 4000 bales of wool were dispatched from the property.

Well known as the late C. S. Gibson was as a sheep and wool classer, he was still more widely and favourably known as a trainer of working sheep dogs. He bought (and named) the original black dog Barb, from an aboriginal travelling through the run with a mob of sheep belonging to the late C. B. Fisher. He afterwards gave this dog to the late Mr. Thos. Edols, who subsequently refused 100 guineas for him. He trained many prizewinners, and was well known from the Lachlan to the Darling as a champion hand with a sheep dog.
