Mr. Daniel Hastie ("Doug") Fleming, of Vitonga, Moree, N.S.W., a well known and popular figure in Merino stud sheep breeding circles and a member of one of the oldest and most respected pastoral families in Australia, died in Sydney towards the end of last month. Mr. Fleming had not enjoyed good health during the past few years, but he had carried on with splendid courage.
The late Doug Fleming was the second son of Mr. F. B. Fleming, of Sydney, governing director of Yumoo Pastoral Company, chairman of directors of Grazcos Co-op. Ltd., and for many years honorary treasurer of the Graziers' Association of New South Wales. He was educated at The Scots College, Sydney, where he was prominent in sport, particularly cricket and tennis. He captained the college first eleven for a couple of years and subsequently represented his district for a long period.
Mr. Fleming was closely associated with the building up of the Yumoo Merino stud, which was transferred to Vitonga a few years ago and which has for some time figured prominently at the Sydney Sheep Show and Sales. He gained early practical experience as a jackeroo at Bundemar Merino stud, Warren, N.S.W., and later married Miss Helen Windeyer, a niece of Mr. E. I. Body.
Apart from his success as a studmaster and in his sporting activities, Doug Fleming had a splendid record of public service and was vice-president of the Moree Show Society. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Judith, and two sons, Douglas and Peter.
