James Joseph Fern (1836–1918)

Mr. James Fern, for many years employed at the Botanic Gardens, who has died at the age of 84 years, arrived in Australia in the 'Sixties. He was one of the founders of the Gardeners' Union, and represented that body on the old Trades and Labour Council in 1890. The late Mr. Fern was the oldest member in this State of the Society St. Vincent de Paul, having joined the society in Scotland in 1858. Four of his sons have seen active service—Mr. Geo. Fern (a South African veteran), Mr. E. L. Fern. A.I.F., Mr. Joseph Fern, A.I.F., and the late Mr. C. S. Fern, A.I.F. The funeral took place in the Roman Catholic section of Waverley Cemetery.
