Very general regret is felt at the sudden and unexpected death, at Stockholm, of Mr. Falstedt, who held the office of Sydney Consul for Sweden and Norway for many years past. When he left Sydney a couple of months ago, with his wife and family, he was apparently in vigorous health, and his friends were quite unprepared for the cable message which reached here on Friday last. Mr. Oscar Hellstrom, the acting consul, can only ascribe his death to a hemorrhage of the lungs, as the deceased gentleman suffered from a lung affection. Mr. Falstedt was born at Stockholm on the 29th June, 1848, and was educated for the Church. Not taking kindly to holy orders, he left Sweden at an early age and went to Spain, and afterwards to England and America. He was appointed consul for Sweden and Norway in 1888 and gave universal satisfaction in the position. Since that time he made two visits to Sweden, his office being filled on each occasion by Mr. Hellstrom. On the first visit he was presented to King Oscar, and was raised by the King to one of the highest orders of knighthood, namely, Knight of the Grand Order of Vasa. Mr. Falstedt was a splendid business man, and affable and honorable in every respect. He paid particular attention to the trade between Scandinavia and the colonies, and although the trip which has witnessed his death was mainly one of pleasure, he gave much of his time to business matters. In Masonic life he was on the eve of taking this 31st degree, and represented at the G.L. of New South Wales the G. L. of Sweden. At all times a charitable man, with a widespread circle of friends and admirers, the deceased will be greatly missed in Sydney.
