Another prominent figure in the pastoral world, Mr. David Elder, passed away last month at his home at Essendon, Melbourne, aged 74 years. The late Mr. Elder was born at Dundee, Scotland, in 1849, and at the age of five years, in company with his parents, came to Victoria. He was educated at the Scotch College, Melbourne, and after leaving school he joined the service of Messrs. Lyell and Gowan, public accountants, In 1879 he entered the service, as manager, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited, and the next year was appointed general manager for Australia, which position he held until his retirement in 1903. Since then the late Mr. Elder retained his interests in the pastoral industry as a director of the following well-known Queensland pastoral companies:—The Portland Downs Pastoral Company, The Malvern Hills Pastoral Company, Coreena Pastoral Company Limited, and The Western Queensland Meat Company. He was also a director of the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation and the Union Trustee Company of Australia Limited. His death will be greatly regretted throughout the pastoral and wool industries.
