Thomas (Tom) Devine (1798–1884)

The death of Mr. Thomas Devine, at the advanced age of 86 years, is recorded in our obituary notices to-day. Mr. Devine was a colonist of 76 years standing; and, though for years he has led a quiet rural life, he was the leading hotel-keeper in Hobart more than half a century back. "Devine's Hotel," situated as it was then, opposite Eddington's "Grapevine Villa" (near Fysh's Warehouse) is remembered by few of our present citizens. Mr. Devine traded with success, and retired to the quietude of a country life some forty years ago. He was the father of a large family, who by marriage are connected with many leading public men. His health was good till the last. He was a hard worker, an industrious farmer, a kind friend, and above all, a good colonist, whose name is respected by those who knew him best, both in the past and present generation of Tasmanian colonists. Mr. Tom Devine quietly passed away yesterday at his Old Beach homestead.
