Two deaths in a day in Hughenden. Old Dan Ryan, and Walter Curtis, both well known men in their sphere. Curtis was an educated man, who, years ago was associated with the Carriers and Workers' Unions. He was a man of upright character and principles. He took up cab business, and many well known western men would wait a while for Curtis, just because they wished to put a shilling or two his way. He was argumentative, and emphatic in his way of expressing himself and those who talked Unionism as we know it in this country, had no place in his cab and he hesitated not, to tell them so. He had some property across the river, and a grazing farm down about the 15-Mile. A year or so ago he got a legacy from England but he was careless, and I doubt if he ever lifted it. That was his way of going through the world; and I'm wondering now if he left his affairs in order, that those of his family across the river, may inherit his estate. Old Curtis, well, no one will say a bad word of him, though, he would best you in political arguments yet these grievances were short lived, because he had the instincts and training of a gentleman, and in argument — no matter how heated— this was apparent; but now he has passed.
