John Henry Crothers (1880–1916)

The old, hut true, Biblical saying, "In the midst of life we are in death," was fully exemplified on Friday afternoon, when the sad news gained currency that Mr. John H. Crothers—more affectionatley known as Jack—had passed away to "that bourne whence no traveller returneth." Those more intimately connected with the deceased gentleman could scarcely realise that their friend had gone to his last long rest, as but a short time previously be was one of themselves, moving about in apparent good health and strength. However, since his death, it has become known that from time to time he suffered from appendicitis, and eventually decided to under go an operation. With that end in view he left Glen Innes—accompanied by his father—on the previous Saturday night for Newcastle, at which place he was operated on by Dr. Leslie on Monday last. The medico soon realised that case was a most critical one owing to the state of the appendix, and feared complications, which at length made their appearance. Jack held his own till Thursday, when a sudden chance for the worse set in. He gradually grew weaker, and soon afternoon on Friday he succumbed, being conscions to the last. His wife left here on Thursday night .
