John Charles Coupe (1843–1913)

Mr. John C. Coupe died at his residence, Portarlington East, last week, the cause of death being pneumonia. He was a native of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and in 1886, with his wife and family, arrived in Melbourne. Shortly after he was appointed a judge of the dogs section of the Victorian Poultry and Dog Show. He quickly came to the front as a judge, and at one show in Melbourne judged 1,100 dogs. He was for some years editor of the kennel page of "The Australasian," writing under the nom de plume of "Kennelman," and later the poultry page, his nom de plume being "Black-Red." About eight years ago he settled in the Portarlington district, and followed agricultural pursuits. Deceased was 70 years of age.
