George James Cobb (1829–1912)

George Cobb, n.d.

George Cobb, n.d.

from Pastoralists' Review, 15 November 1912

We publish in this issue a photograph of the late George James Cobb, of Calala, near Maitland, N.S.W., who was born at Anambah on 14th May, 1829. He was educated in Maitland, and after Anambah was sold to the late J. K. Mackay, the subject of this notice went to Martindale to manage for the late Hon. James White. In 1871 he took up the management of Belltrees, the well-known estate of Messrs. H. E. A. and V. White, and in 1886 he removed to Calala, and resided there till his death in September last. During the whole of his career, Mr. Cobb established a splendid reputation, not only as a careful and energetic manager, but an industrious farmer, and was the first, when he was a much younger man, to use the reaper and binder and other methods now common in the operations at Anambah. He also had a reputation for intelligence and capability in many other directions, which established for him a name which was much respected throughout the Hunter. He married in February, 1854, Jessie Mackay, sister of late J. K. Mackay, of Caugon, Dungog, and reared a large family, five of whom survive him, viz., Messrs. G. F. Cobb, manager of Ellerton Station; S. E. Cobb, manager of Belltrees for the Messrs White; K. M. Cobb, manager for the Exors. late H. C. White, Bando, and two daughters.
