Alfred William (Alf) Carter (c. 1869–1935)
The death occurred suddenly on Friday, after a brief illness, of Mr. Alfred Carter, late of Booth Street, Annandale, who had been secretary of the Factory Department of the A.W.U. for many years, and had been well known in the Labor Movement.
Mr. Carter, who was 70 years' of age, had attended his official duties last Tuesday. He took ill on his return home, and was removed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on Thursday in a serious condition. He failed to rally and died on Friday.
As organiser of the Factory Employees' Union, which was subsequently amalgamated with the A.W.U., Mr. Carter became widely known in trade union circles.
The funeral, which left his late residence for the Field of Mars Cemetery on Saturday, was largely attended by officers and members of the union and representatives of many business establishments.
The chief mourners were Mrs. Mary Carter (widow), two sons, and four daughters.
Pall-bearers were Messrs. V. Ross (Marrickville Margarine Co.). W. Nicholls (F. Barnes. Ltd.), F. Bergan (Meggitt's Ltd.), J. McPhillip (Palmolive Co. Ltd.), L. Latham (Lever Bros.), A. Gibson (Meggitt's Ltd.).
Others present included Messrs. P. May (secretary, Lever Bros.' Sick and Accident Fund), J. Dutton, C. Gates.
The funeral arrangements were conducted by Labor Motor Funerals Ltd.
