Edward James (Ted) Bowman (1874–1943)

A foundation member of the Australian Workers' Union (Mr. Edward Bowman) died suddenly on Wednesday at the home of the Northern Organiser of the union (Ald. T. Breen). He was 69 and had been ill for a short time.
Mr. Bowman, who was born on the Tichbourne (New South Wales) goldfield, was actively associated with the Union for nearly 50 years. In the early days of the union he was Secretary of Bourke branch. Later he held a similar position for the Western district, with headquarters at Armidale. Until his retirement from union activity eight years ago, he was an organiser for the central branch.
For more than 40 years he was associated in various parts of the Commonwealth with the following three A.W.U. pioneers who died recently the Federal Secretary — (Mr. E. Grayndler), New South Wales Secretary (Mr. J. McNeil) and Victorian Secretary (Mr. D. Gunn). For several years he was a shearing companion of Mr. McNeil. A brother and a sister survive.
Officials of the A.W.U. and Water Board Employees' Union attended the funeral to Sandgate yesterday.
Sympathy with the relatives was expressed last night by Newcastle Trades Hall Council.
