Mr J. A. [Joseph Anthony] Bodkin, MLC, died last Saturday in Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney.
Mr Bodkin, who was 47, left a widow and six daughters.
Mr Bodkin was a Labor member of the Legislative Council, an alderman of Sydney City Council, and a member of Sydney County Council.
He was also a member of the State ALP executive.
Mr Bodkin's death reduces Labor's majority in the Legislative Council to three, and will cause another by-election.
Last March Labor gained a majority in the Legislative Council for the first time since 1934.
On Tuesday the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly jointly elected a member to fill the Council vacancy caused by the resignation of a Labor member, Mr Eli Harrison, to allow him to enter Federal politics.
