The death occurred at his home at Hunter's Hill yesterday of Judge Walter Bevan, who retired from the District Court about 11 years ago. He was 81 years of age.
Judge Bevan, who was born in Paris, of Cornish parents, had a brilliant legal career. He came to Australia about 60 years ago and lived for some time in Queensland, where he was employed as a surveyor.
He later came to Sydney, where he studied law, becoming associate to Sir George Innes. After being called to the Bar he became Crown Prosecutor in the north-west of N.S.W., afterwards Solicitor-General, and later Judge in the District Court.
For many years the late Judge Bevan was an active worker in the interests of prison reform. He is survived by his widow, three sons and three daughters.
The funeral will leave All Saints' Church, Hunter's Hill, at 3 p.m. today for the Northern Suburbs' Crematorium
