John William Begg (?–1935)

The death has occurred of Mr. John William Begg, a member of the legal firm of Moule, Hamilton, and Derham, of Collins Street. Mr Begg, who qualified as a solicitor in New Zealand, arrived in Victoria in 1890, and he served the firm of Moule, Hamilton, and Kiddle as a clerk until he was admitted to practise as a barrister and solicitor. He remained with the firm and was highly esteemed as a sound lawyer. When a few years ago the name of the firm was changed to Moule, Hamilton, and Derham, Mr Begg became a partner. As a young man he was a fine athlete. He was one of the early members of the Melbourne Harriers, the pioneer amateur athletic club of Victoria with which he earned some fame as a quarter-mile runner. He was also an enthusiastic oarsman, rowing with the Melbourne Rowing Club for many years. Mr Begg leaves a widow and an adult family. The funeral will leave 16 Stonehaven avenue, East Malvern at noon to-day for the Brighton Cemetery.
