Miss Doris Beeby, Australian Communist Party member who died on Sunday after a long illness, was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium on Monday. Miss Beeby joined the British Communist Party in 1939 after her return from Spain, where, as a member of the Spanish Relief Movement, she saw the brutality of Fascism at first hand. On the day she joined the Party she was out selling the Daily Worker on the streets. On returning to Australia, Miss Beeby became keenly interested in women's rights. As an organiser for the Sheetmetal Workers' Union she played an active part in the struggle for equal pay and in other campaigns affecting women. Speaking at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, ACP President Mr. L. L. Sharkey described Miss Beeby as a true soldier of Communism. "She was a fearless, devoted, self-sacrificing fighter for a better world," said Mr. Sharkey. "Her's was not a mean and spiritless life. It was honorable and courageous and full of care for the welfare of her fellows."
