Miss Ethel Barringer, who died suddenly at Blackwood on Saturday, was the daughter of the late Mrs. Fanny Barringer. Miss Barringer was well known in art circles, and has contributed many etchings to exhibitions here and in the other States. She was the assistant teacher of applied arts and handicraft at the School of Arts and Crafts, North terrace, and was at the school on Saturday, seemingly in perfect health. For many years, however, she has had heart trouble. She was educated at the Advanced School under Miss Rees George, and was a student of Mr. Hans Heysen and also of the School of Arts and Crafts. She studied in London for several years and took courses in enamelling, jewellery designing, life work, and more particularly in etching. She was at the St. John Wood Art School and the Sir John Cass Technical School. On her return to Adelaide she set up a studio of her own in Flinders street. but gave it up on her appointment to her position at the School of Arts and Crafts. She had just completed her fourth year at this school, and was greatly loved both by teachers and scholars. Her death came as a shock to the members of the staff, who had been with her on Saturday morning. She was in excellent spirits, having just received some congratulatory letters from people who had seen some exhibits of hers at a display of the Women Painter-Etchers Society in Sydney. Miss Barringer was 41 years of age.
