The sudden death of Professor Robert Cecil Bald towards the end of August came as a great shock to the University. Professor Bald had accepted the invitation of the University Council to occupy a further chair in the Department of English and would have joined the staff at the beginning of 1966. He was a most distinguished Australian with a world wide reputation in his field. At the time of his death he was Professor of English at the University of Chicago.
