Thomas Oswald Baker (1887–1956)

Mr. Thomas Oswald Baker, the last surviving brother of a partnership of three which did much to develop the pastoral country of southwest Queensland, died recently at the age of 69.

The first venture of Baker Bros. (Pty.) Ltd., the partnership of the brothers Herbert E., Reginald A., and Thomas O. Baker, was the purchase of Alice Downs, Augathella, Q. That property was later sold, and Gowrie, near Charleville, was bought in 1913. Other properties which were purchased and which were still in the proprietary's ownership when Mr. Thomas Baker died included Tongy, near Mitchell; Elmina and Calabah, near Wyandra; Wainui, at Bowenville; and Noella, Charleville. He managed Elmina for some years and later Wainui, most of which was resumed for soldier settlement. At the time of his death Mr. Baker also owned Lulworth, Wyandra; Rosenthal, Charleville; and Rosewood, Mitchell. He was chairman of directors of Baker Bros. (Pty.) Ltd.

Mr. Baker, who was born at Bindebango, Bollon, Q., is survived by his wife and three daughters. His only son died some years ago.
