Gladys Henrietta Baker (1897–1946)

Mrs Gladys Henrietta Loveday Baker, MBE, who died suddenly on December 29 at her plantation on Witu Island, New Guinea, gave courageous help to a party who escaped from New Britain after the invasion by the Japanese, and her action saved many lives. She accompanied the party to Australia, and after a convalescent period joined the AAMWS, and was placed on the reserve list in 1944 with the rank of lieutenant. Mrs Baker, who was the widow of the late Mr. William Baker, and a niece of Mr H. J. Hine, of Prince's Hill, had only recently returned to New Guinea.
