Sir George Baillie (1856–1896)

A large number of friends in Victoria and New South Wales regret the death from typhoid fever, at Toorak, Melbourne, on 2nd April, of Sir George Baillie, Bart., of Benerembah station, near Hay, and Polkemmet, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. Sir George took an active interest in the management of Benerembah, and in all matters of concern to pastoralists, and was respected and liked by all with whom he came in contact. As a justice of the peace he was well known at the Melbourne City police court, and his unaffected manner and sterling qualities made him friends wherever he went. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Thomas Baillie, of Toorak, who was fourth son of Sir William Baillie, Bart., of Polkemmet. Sir George was educated at the Scotch College, Melbourne, and Caius College, Cambridge. He succeeded his uncle in the title in 1890, the latter dying without issue. Sir George was born in October, 1856, and was therefore in his 40th year. He was unmarried, and is succeeded by his brother, Mr. Robert Alexander Baillie, who will be the fourth baronet. The title was conferred in 1823.
