Frederick Henry Moore (1839–1934)

from West Australian

The late Frederick Henry Moore, who died at Hobart on April 2 at the age of 95, was born at his father's property, Qakover, near Guildford, in 1839, writes a correspondent. He was the nephew of George Fletcher Moore, the first Advocate-General of Western Australia, who wrote his impressions of this State in the book entitled Ten Years in Western Australia. His sister was the late Mrs. Annie Fletcher Wittenoom, and his late brothers were William Dalgety Moore and Samuel Fortesque Moore, all, of whom were well known in Western Australia. His mother was Miss Dorothy Dalgety, whose father was one of the last military commandants in the Tower of London.

The late Mr. Moore left Western Australia at the age of 14 for Melbourne on the 84 ton barquentine Louisa, and afterwards went to school in England. At an early age he joined the firm of Dalgety and Co., in London, and in 1864 was sent out by that company to Dunedin, New Zealand. In 1865 he became manager of the Invercargill branch of Dalgety, Rathay and Co. Later he went to Launceston, Tasmania, as resident partner of Dalgety, Moore and Co. In 1875 he went to Christchurch, New-Zealand, and later he opened a branch for Dalgety and Co., Ltd., in Sydney of which he was subsequently managing director. He was a director of the Imperial Insurance Co. and was also a director of the Union Bank of Australia, Sydney. He travelled extensively, and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London for about 40 years. He was also a member of the Royal Society. He was a member of the Union Club, Sydney, of the Melbourne Club, and of the Australian Jockey Club, Sydney. He leaves a widow, son and daughter.
