Leslie James McKean (1900–1945)

ONE of the largest funerals witnessed in Camperdown for some time took place last Saturday afternoon, when the re mains of the late Mr Leslie James McKean, who died suddenly last Thursday night, were interred in the Camperdown cemetery. As a mark of respect the shire office was closed on Saturday morning and the flag on the shire hall was lowered.

A service was conducted by the Rev. W. E. Moorhouse at St. Paul's Church of England at 2.15 o'clock, and at 2.30 o'clock the funeral left for the cemetery. The high esteem in which the late Mr McKean was held by citizens of Camperdown and surrounding districts was evidenced by the long line of over 70 cars which followed the remains to their last resting place. The attendance was representative of all sections of the community and there were many very beautiful floral tributes.

A service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. E. Moorhouse. This was followed by a Masonic service, conducted by Wor. Bro. J. Christopher, of the Leura Lodge of Freemasons, of which the late Mr McKean was a member for many years. The coffin-bearers were Messrs J. C. McKean, D. McKean, W. McKean (brothers), J. Tonkin, N. Podger (brothers-in-law) and G. Siebler (nephew). The pall was supported by Messrs T. F. Little, R. A. McAlpine, R. McRae, A. McRae, P. T. Gleeson, C. G. Haugh, W. J. Best and, J. C. Pitcher.

The funeral arrangements were in charge of Messrs Walls and Macqueen.
