Harvey Jones (1934–1988)

by Allan Barton

Mr Harvey Jones, Head of the Division of Finance and Accounting, died on 9 June, aged 54. He had undergone a major operation for cancer last August and appeared to make a miraculous recovery, which enabled him to return to work in November. Sadly, the cancer flared up again and Harvey had been in hospital or at home since Easter.

Harvey will be sadly missed by his many friends at the University. He was one of the longest-serving members of staff, having been originally appointed to the staff of the Accounts Branch of the former Canberra University College in April 1959.

Before joining the College, Harvey worked in the former Postmaster-General's Department, and rose rapidly up through the ranks from postal clerk to postmaster. Likewise at the University, he worked his way up to become the Business Manager of The Faculties, a position he held for seven years before his appointment to the newly created position of Head of the Division of Finance and Accounting at the beginning of 1984.

In this position, he played a very active leadership role in reorganising the operations of the Accounts Branch, recruiting new professional staff and reorganising the University's accounting and financial reporting systems to comply with new and very stringent Department of Finance and Australian Audit Office requirements.

He was able to see both the broad picture and the details of administration, and he has left the University with an effective financial system which is held in the highest esteem by other universities. His commitment to the University was further exemplified by his assuming the position of Acting Head of the Management Information Systems Division in 1986 on top of his existing onerous position, in order to assist with the redevelopment of the University's computerised information systems.

Harvey was active in the CMF for many years. He served in the Royal New South Wales Regiment and rose to the rank of captain. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration for his military service.

Harvey Jones was an excellent servant of the University. Throughout his career, he has a highly loyal and conscientious member of the administrative staff. It was always a pleasure to work with Harvey, and one could always depend upon him to provide services and leadership at a high level. He maintained his interest in the accounting profession and was made a Fellow of the Australian Society of Accountants in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Terri, and by his three daughters and two sons.
