Hawker, George Charles (1851–1889)

We regret to have to announce the death of Mr. George Charles Hawker, second son of the Hon. G. C. Hawker, M.P., which occurred at Port Victor on Friday. The deceased gentleman had been staying at Port Victor for some time, and it appears that while on a fishing excursion he caught a cold, which led to rheumatic fever, from which he died. Mr. Hawker is well known, and very popular in the circles in which he moved. For some time he had the management of his father's estate at Bungaree, and took a great interest in sheep breeding, much of the success of the Bungaree stud flocks being due to him. In the city he was best known as an expert polo player. He was married only about two years to a daughter of Mr. Barr Smith, with whom much sympathy will be felt for her bereavement. Both the Hon. G. C. Hawker and Mr. Barr Smith are now in Europe, and so is Mr. E. W. Hawker, M.P., a brother of the deceased.
