Hamlyn-Harris, Cyril (1878–1923)

from Cairns Post (Qld)

The death of Mr. Cyril Hamlyn-Harris, well-known and highly respected solicitor of Cairns, on Tuesday afternoon, was received with widespread regret.

Mr. Hamlyn-Harris had been suffering from carious teeth, from which septic poisoning spread to the gums. A couple of' extractions were made, but the inflammation had already affected the gums and septic infection of the neck and face followed. He had been very ill for about six weeks, and last week a severe attack of malaria fever set in, which, in his weak state of health, he was unable to combat, and his death was announced at about 5 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.

The late Mr. Hamlyn-Harris was a married man, and leaves a wife and family of 5 children. He was 44 years of age.

Born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England on October 2, 1878, he was educated on the Continent, after which he came to Australia, and served his articles with the Brisbane legal firm of Messrs Flower and Hart. For a number of years he was Associate to Mr. Justice Shand, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1910.

Following his admission as a solicitor, Mr Hamlyn-Harris became a member of the firm of Messrs. MacDonnell and Hamlyn-Harris as Townsville manager.

In 1916, he came to Cairns, where he has resided ever since, and practised his profession.

Professionally, Mr. Hamlyn-Harris was regarded as a sound, able lawyer, and he preferred consultations to court work.

He was a man of charming personality, naturally of a retiring disposition, but an engaging and agreeable conversationalist. It was a pleasure to meet him, both in social and professional life, and his loss will be deeply regretted by his many friends and colleagues.

The late Mr. Hamlyn-Harris was a brother of Doctor Hamlyn-Harris, late curator of the Brisbane Museum who is a distinguished authority on Queensland Natural History, and has written several entertaining studies on aboriginal lore.

The funeral of the late Mr. C. Hamlyn-Harris will leave the residence, Grove-street, at 12 noon to-day, and the remains will be interred at Martyn-street cemetery.
