Victor Stewart Grayland (1884–1947)

A noted athlete and sportsman, Mr. Victor Stewart Grayland, 63 years, passed away at his home, Cobden, on December 28, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Grayland was born in Cobden and was the eldest son of a well-known and highly respected pioneer family, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grayland.

The death of Mr. Grayland will call to the mind of every sportsman in the district the fine athletic and sporting qualities possessed by him. He played football with the Cobden team for many years, was an official of the Cobden Turf Club and Athletic Club, a foot-runner of note and a splendid cricketer.

He was a very successful farmer and was popular throughout the length and breadth of the district. To his wife and two children, Norma and Neil, the sympathy of everyone will be extended in their irreparable loss. His wife was formerly Miss Florrie Bateman, a member of a well-known district family. Mr. Grayland's sisters and brother live in the district; Miriam (Mrs. R. Gilbert), Violet (Cobden), Grace (Mrs. W. Gilbert, Geelong), Garnet (Cobden), Maude (Mrs. Bert Harris), and Muriel (Mrs. J. McKenzie, Bostock's Creek).

The funeral took place to the Cobden cemetery following a service at the house, the Rev H. G. Ford officiating at the service and at the graveside. Six nephews of deceased were coffin bearers and were Messrs. K. McKenzie, K. Harris, L. Grayland, D. Nelson, C. and J. Gilbert. Supporters of the pall were Messrs. J. Pilkington, W. Williams, L. Monk, G. S. W. Meade, J. Hill, G. Fenton and A. T. Currell.
